Angela Brower

Angela Brower (July 25 1983) is an American mezzo-soprano opera singer from Arizona. She is known for performing trouser roles, such as the title role of Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss in the opera's Colombia premiere. Notable roles at the Bayerische Staatsoper have included both Annio and Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito; Der Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos; Angelina in La Cenerentola; H"ansel in H"ansel und Gretel; Charlotte in Werther; and Adalgisa in Norma. In 2013, Angela Brower made her San Francisco Opera debut as Nicklausse in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and she returned for the 2014/15 season to sing Cherubino. Previous seasons have also seen Ms. Brower in roles such as Octavian in Klagenfurt, and as Siebel in a production of Gounod’s Faust directed by Bartlett Sher at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. On the concert stage, she has performed works such as Alban Berg’s Sieben fr"uhe Lieder with the Tiroler Symphonie Orchester in Innsbruck, and she sang Chausson’s Po`eme de l’amour et de la mer, Op. 19 and Ravel’s Sh'eh'erazade with the NDR Sinfonieorchester, under the musical direction of Yal Pascal Tortilier. Angela Brower made her first recording in 2013, appearing as Dorabella in a complete recording of Mozart’s Cos`i fan tutte, conducted by Yannick N'ezet-S'eguin and released by Deutsche Grammophon the following year. Ms. Brower returned to Baden-Baden in the summer of 2015 to record again under the direction of Maestro N'ezet-S'eguin with Deutsche Grammophon, this time as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro. Angela Brower was raised in Arizona and studied at Arizona State University and Indiana University. Her career started as a young artist singing at the Glimmerglass Opera Young American Artists Program in 2008. She was then invited to join the Opera Studio at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, where she later became a member of the Ensemble from 2010-2016. Her portrayal of Dorabella in Cos`i fan tutte earned her particular attention on the main stage of the National Theater, which led to her receiving the prestigious Munich Festival Prize in 2009.
